How to Replace an audi remote key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi key replacement cost uk since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is turning. If this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This is the same across the programming audi keyfob key (Highly recommended Resource site) 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.FIAT.png
