Path of Exile Item Upgrading

The ability to upgrade items allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting its base stats or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The Upgrade Item (Lovewiki.Faith) system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks, and each item is able to be upgraded so many times before it is "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few items and maximize the effect of these items rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.

This will enable the item to receive new upgrade components and a higher chance of success. This bonus is known as Artisan's Energy. It will reset at 0 if the upgrade fails or increases if the upgrade succeeds.

If an item upgrader does not reach its maximum level, the NPC grants the player the choice to transfer it to another character and then re-infuse it with a different set or upgrades. This process can take up to two hours and costs the same amount of material, though it will result in a lower chance of success.

Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is an important aspect of the game and can dramatically enhance an item's strength, damage, or other attributes. You can do this through the menu for items, or by pressing the Reroll button when you upgrade an item. Rerolling items can be costly and should be handled with care.

Reroll tokens are derived by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can be used to upgrade the original item or a similar item. Recyclable items come with an indicator of level that indicates how much of the upgrade gauge is filled. The rarity and cost of upgrading an item determines the amount of level that has been filled.

In the past, some upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you'd get the stats that mattered most to your build more often than other items. This included stats like armor's total armour, thorns, and control impaired duration reduced stats or the weapon's bonus attack speed and crit strike chance.

This has changed since the last patch. Priority affixes were removed, and all upgrades have the same chance of rolling each statistic. This can be a great or bad thing depending on your requirements and expectations from your equipment.
